Our Rich History
A&W got its start in 1919 when Roy W. Allen set up a roadside drink stand to offer a new taste treat—root beer—at a parade honoring returning World War I veterans in Lodi, California.
Allen partnered with Frank Wright in 1922, and they derived the name A&W from their last initials. The following year, Allen and Wright began franchising the drink, creating the nation's first franchise restaurant chain.
A&W introduced the world-famous Bacon Cheeseburger in 1963, helping to launch the bacon craze that continues today. A&W also invented the specialty hamburger, with the iconic Papa Burger, Mama Burger, Teen Burger, and Baby Burger.
Today, A&W continues to serve its famous draft root beer in a frosty mug alongside a delectable menu of burgers, chicken, coneys, and more, bringing joy to millions of customers across America.
